If you’re considering ABA therapy for your child, a consultation with a behaviour consultant (BC) is the first step toward learning more about the services we have available and to discuss what is the best fit for your child and family.

Understanding Your Child’s Needs

The consultation will involve discussing about your child’s current strengths, challenges, and goals. The BC will engage with you by asking questions such as:

  • What developmental milestones has your child achieved?

  • Are there particular behaviours or skills that you are seeking support with?

  • What goals do you have for your child’s growth and independence?

The purpose is to develop a holistic understanding of your child’s unique characteristics and needs.

Explaining ABA Therapy

The Behaviour Consultant will also share the foundational concepts of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and explore how it can support your child. Important areas of discussion may include:

  • Positive reinforcement: Supporting and encouraging behaviours in a nurturing way.

  • Skill-building: Fostering essential communication, social, and daily living skills tailored to your child’s strengths and interests.

  • Behaviour reduction: Utilizing evidence-based strategies to understand and address challenging behaviours with empathy and care.

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions during the consultation to ensure a clear understanding of this approach that respects and values your child’s individuality.

Outlining the Process

The BC will also outline the next steps, which may include:

  • Formal in-person assessments with yourself or the child (e.g., ABLLS-R, or a functional behaviour assessment)

  • Scheduling therapy sessions and determining frequency

  • Matching your child with a team of behaviour interventionists and a board-certified behaviour analyst (BCBA)

They will also discuss the logistics of therapy delivery, whether at home, at the centre, or in a community setting.

To make the most of your consultation session:

  • Bring any relevant documents, such as developmental assessments or reports from other service providers

  • Write down your child’s strengths, challenges, and your goals
